Over the years, I’ve seen thyroid cases in my wellness clinic skyrocket. While hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s cases are rising, iodine intake, the chief nutrient necessary for thyroid health, is declining. This is important because physicians have been telling patients to cut back on iodized salt. Most Americans consume refined table salt, which lacks healthy alkaline minerals compared to mineral salts like Celtic Grey Sea Salt, that contains small traces of iodine and are loaded with trace minerals..
If you have thyroid concerns, carefully start to increase sources of iodine into your diet. If you are not on thyroid medication, begin by adding different kinds of fresh and dried seaweeds into your diet. Fresh is always best, but if seaweeds are scarce, alternate between kelp powder (brown algae) and dulse flakes (sea lettuce), which are both highly alkaline sea vegetables. Start with 1/8 teaspoon daily for one month and see how you feel, and then go up steadily from there. If you are on medications, speak with your health care practitioner before implementing any changes.
Urine pH needs to be in a range of 6.3 to 6.6 for iodine uptake to occur; otherwise, it’s a perfect recipe for thyroid imbalance. Increase sea vegetables along with more dark-green leafy vegetables, and healthy alkaline fats. These will make a big difference.
